Prenatal Classes


  • Offered by the Perth District Health Unit and Stratford General Hospital.
  • Ideal for expectant parents in the last half of their pregnancy.
  • The class series includes 2 parts.


(One Saturday class in Stratford and Listowel OR 3 weekday evening classes in Stratford offered by Perth District Health Unit)

Topics include:

  • Key steps to a positive childbirth experience
  • Techniques for comfort and coping with labour pain
  • The partner’s role in labour: a toolbox of strategies
  • Preparing for parenting: starting off strong
  • Bringing baby home: newborn 101
  • Breastfeeding basics: from birth and beyond
  • Contact the Health Unit for upcoming class dates and times

PART 2 ($30)*

(One 4 hour Saturday class at Stratford General Hospital)

Topics include:

  • The process of labour: helping you prepare
  • Giving birth at the hospital: what you can expect, and a labour and delivery room tour
  • Making an informed decision about routine and non-routine medical procedures
  • Pain medication options for labour
  • Recovering from childbirth
  • Your newborn in the first few days.
  • Prenatal class dates for Stratford General Hospital:
    • 2016: October 15, November 5, December 3.
    • 2017: January 21, February 11, March 4, April 8, June 10, August 19, September 23, October 21, November 11

*Listowel deliveries are welcome to attend

For Parents Delivering in Listowel

  • Listowel Memorial Hospital does not offer prenatal classes.
  • North Perth residents are encouraged to attend the Health Unit’s Perth County Prenatal Classes in Listowel for their childbirth education needs.

For pregnant youth and young adults and their partners, and/or support persons.

  • Options include group sessions and/or one-to-one with a public health nurse.
  • You can attend at any time in your pregnancy but we recommend calling as early as possible.
  • Topics may include: your pregnancy, labour and delivery, caring for your baby, infant safety, breastfeeding and infant feeding, becoming a parent. Topics discussed are determined by the expectant parents.
  • Various times and locations throughout Perth County.
  • Transportation help available.

This free, single evening session is open to any pregnant women and their partner/support person, whether this is your first child or your second or third, etc.

The class covers:

  • why breastfeeding is so important for you, your baby and your family
  • how to latch and position your baby
  • the benefits of skin-to-skin
  • ensuring you have a great milk supply
  • how to know when your baby is getting enough
  • recognizing when your baby is hungry
  • and much more.
