Healthy Babies Healthy Children

Is a free program for expectant parents and families with children from birth to 6 years of age. We work closely with your health care providers to provide information and support services to support you in your role as parents.

While You're Expecting
Public Health Nurses and Parent Resource Visitors can help you learn how to give your baby the very best start. A Public Health Nurse can visit you in your home to:

  • help you understand your pregnancy and how to take care of yourself

  • help you prepare for your new baby and what to expect when you give birth

  • talk to you about the foods you and your baby need

  • prepare you for breastfeeding and feeding your baby

  • refer you to medical care and prenatal services in your community.
A Parent Resource Visitor is a parent who has experience in raising her own family. She can visit in your home to:
  • encourage and support you during your pregnancy

  • teach you the basics about baby care

  • show you how to make your home safe for baby

  • help you to find prenatal services in your community.
When Your Baby Has Arrived

A Friendly Phone Call
When you get home from the hospital, a Public Health Nurse will call you and will answer your questions about:
  • breastfeeding or formula feeding

  • any health concerns that you have about yourself or your baby

  • comforting the baby

  • adjusting to your new role as parents

  • finding services in your community that meet your needs.
A Visit to Your Home
Kids don't come with instructions. As new parents, you will probably have lots of questions when you bring your new baby home. Even if you've had a baby before, each baby and experience is unique.

Within the next few weeks, a Public Health Nurse will offer to come and visit you and your new baby in your home. She will offer you a variety of parenting resources and will be able to answer your questions about a variety of topics including:
  • your recovery and any concerns that you may have

  • breastfeeding and formula feeding

  • your baby's weight

  • ways to encourage your baby's development

  • car seats and making your home safe for the baby

  • immunizations for your new baby

  • helping other children adjust to a new baby

  • how to find good childcare

  • parenting programs and services in your neighbourhood.
Ongoing Support
Some families can benefit from ongoing services from a Public Health Nurse and Parent Resource Visitor. Healthy Babies Healthy Children can offer practical help through ongoing home visits during the early years in your child's life. You may be eligible for the home visiting program if you:
  • need extra support and encouragement

  • are finding it challenging to be a parent

  • are parenting alone

  • have a child with health or developmental concerns.
If you are interested in any of the services offered through the Healthy Babies Healthy Children program, you can call the Perth District Health Unit directly or you can give your family doctor, midwife, friend or family member permission to call on your behalf.
