Health Canada warns of potential cancer risk associated with gentian violet

Canadians are advised to stop using products containing gentian violet, an antiseptic dye used to treat fungal infections. Health Canada warns that exposure to these products could increase a person’s risk of cancer.

Products with gentian violet are often used on the nipple of nursing mothers in order to treat oral thrush in babies.

If you have a product containing gentian violet, please return it to a pharmacy for proper disposal. Consult your health care professional if you have any concerns.
