What is Needle Exchange?

Needle exchange programs:

  • provide new injection equipment to promote the safer injection and inhalation of drugs.
  • provide sterile injection equipment to reduce the chance of developing abscesses and infections which may lead to costly medical expenses and poor health outcomes.
  • connect clients with health services staff and allow for open, non-judgmental conversations.

Contact between staff and needle exchange clients can contribute to stabilizing or improving the client’s general health and drug use.

What is Harm Reduction?

Harm reduction:

  • aims to reduce the negative health, social and economic consequences that may result from the use of legal and illegal drugs, without necessarily reducing drug use.
  • acknowledges there will always be some people who choose to use drugs and that there is no one solution to the problem of drugs in society.
  • ensures that people who use drugs are treated with respect and without stigma.
  • focuses on decreasing the harms related to drug use through education, prevention and treatment.
  • minimizes the potential harmful effects of drug use to both the user and the community through a needle exchange program.
