Cervical Cancer
- Cancer of the cervix is the most common cancer among women in Canada.
- Each week in Ontario, 11 women develop cervical cancer of which 3 will succumb to this illness.
- In 2002, 560 Ontario women were diagnosed with cervical cancer and 160 women died from the disease.
- Cervical cancer is largely preventable. Having regular Pap tests can prevent almost 90% of cervical cancer cases.
- Women who have not had a Pap smear in the last three years have two times the risk of developing cervical cancer.
What are the risk factors of developing cervical cancer?
The risk factors for cervical cancer are similar to those for sexually transmitted infections.
- Being sexually active.
- Multiple sexual partners.
- Sexual activity before the age of 18.
- Infection with human papillomavirus (HPV).
- Smoking.
What can I do to minimize my risk?
- Take control - get informed.
- Talk to your doctor.
- Schedule a Pap test.
- Make regular Pap tests a habit!
