Bisphenol A
Bisphenol A, or BPA, is a synthetic chemical widely used in the plastics industry. BPA is the basis for polycarbonate products, which are typically very hard, clear plastics. Products that contain BPA can include baby bottles, “sippy cups”, reusable water bottles and food containers. BPA is also used to make epoxy resins that line tin cans, including most cans of infant formula.
On October 17, 2008, Health Canada announced that it will be prohibiting the importation, sale and advertising of polycarbonate baby bottles that contain bisphenol A (BPA). The government will also be taking action to limit the amount of BPA that is being released into the environment.
