Health Unit Celebrates World Breastfeeding Week and Trains Peer Volunteers
Friday, September 29th, 2017
Perth County ― World Breastfeeding Week is being celebrated across Canada from October 1st to 7th, 2017.
As part of their celebration, the Health Unit hosted their first Breastfeeding Peer Volunteer Training workshop earlier in September. The event was organized by the Kids First Perth Breastfeeding Group and involved nine mothers who are passionate about breastfeeding and eager to support other mothers on their breastfeeding journeys. Discussion topics included the role of peer volunteers, helping moms make informed decisions about infant feeding, positive communication and strategies for responding to online Facebook posts, and the importance of encouraging moms to seek professional breastfeeding services when needed.
“Research shows that mothers are more successful at breastfeeding and do it for longer when they have better access to local supports and information,” says Glenda Blair, Public Health Nurse. “These drop-in programs and the online support group are tools that help moms to successfully breastfeed.”
